Due to a widespread error, some of you may have been sent a message from Microsoft this morning asking you to change your e-mail address to continue using Windows Live services. Please do not be alarmed; there's absolutely no need to make any changes.
A number of Australian Windows Live users were mistakenly sent a Messenger update notice asking them to change their e-mail addresses as part of a "system enhancement" initiative.
The message, sent from the "Windows Live Service Staff" account, falsely informed customers they would need to log out and change their e-mail address in order to continue using Windows Live Messenger.
These service notifications are only used for urgent issues, unfortunately they are not immune to human error, and somebody sent out this message when they hadn't intended to. We will definitely be reviewing our process to make sure we avoid such mistakes in the future.
Anyone who clicked on the link below the message this morning would have been informed that it was not possible to change their Windows Live ID. For anyone concerned this was a phishing message, we want to assure you that it wasn't.
The Windows Live team would like to apologise sincerely for any confusion or inconvenience caused by the message.
